A review of some tried-and-true remedies for the morning after

Who among us hasn’t over-imbibed from time to time? Vows of “I’m never drinking again,” often follow but rarely stick. Are hangovers unavoidable? Perhaps, but we at the Inevitable Gentleman researched some tried-and-true cures, and even a few new ones, to help you if you neglect the two aspirin before your head hits the pillow the night before.

Dehydration seems to be at the root of the problem since alcohol causes the kidneys to release more water. More urine production leads to an imbalance in electrolytes, which helps our bodies stabilize water, acid, and the nutrients in and waste out of our cells.

Sure, drinking lots of fluids can help increase urination but it ultimately rehydrates the body, which is the goal. Many swear by liquid electrolyte beverages such as Pedialyte to help quell the effects of a hangover faster. A common practice is to down a bottle before bed to alleviate the aftereffects altogether.

Stay in bed longer. That’s right – no excuses. More sleep can help reduce the side effects of a hangover, so roll over and get some more z-z-z-z-z’s.

Lack of fuel can prolong a hangover, so getting some carbs in your system can help get your blood sugar up and start fueling your body. Buttered toast or plain cereal are mild ways to get your balance back.

Lastly, an unconventional and seemingly cruel option is to go for a short run. You read that right. A three-mile run, while impossible to fathom when you’re hurting, has been found to quickly eliminate all the impacts of a hangover. It’s that first step that’s a doozy.

Remember, a gentleman must be able to handle his liquor, but should not also be a wet blanket the next morning as a result.
