Why the Eames chair remains iconic – 60 years later...

It’s undeniably one of the most coveted furniture objects since its inception in 1956. Famously described as “a special refuge from the strains of modern living,” the Eames lounge chair (and ottoman) is considered one of the most significant designs of the 20th century. Top-notch craftsmanship and exacting attention to detail have made it a fixture in fine homes the world over.

Created by Charles and Ray Eames, married industrial designers, as part of their partnership for the Herman Miller Furniture Company, the chair (670) along with a matching ottoman (671), were released for the high-end market and has since become one of the most famous chair designs ever created. It is one of the first chairs to be mass produced at a luxury price point.

The exact reason why the Eames chair design has endured throughout the years is illusive. There’s something about the chair that exudes artistry like a sculpture or painting. Modern and stylish, the chair is also functional and comfortable, as well. Perhaps it symbolizes status or that you’ve made it.
Whatever the reason, we at the Inevitable Gentleman could not agree more. It’s worth a paycheck and you’ll have it for life. Don’t take our word for it. A version of the mid-century icon has appeared in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
