Dopp kit essentials to make travel a breeze

Planning a weekend away or a lengthy getaway? A proper gentleman never forgets to pack his Dopp kit. The name for these travel cases or toiletry bags derives from leather craftsman Charles Doppelt, whose company designed the case in 1926.

Toiletry bags were first issued by the U.S. Military during World War I and by World War II, became known as “Dopp” kits.

Today, you can find them in a variety of styles, sizes and colors. Whatever your preference, just make sure you know what to put in them, so you’re prepared while traveling. You don’t want a bag that rivals your carry-on in size, so being smart with what to include goes a long way. We at the Inevitable Gentleman offer this handy list…

Shave Basics

One of the most important items in a Dopp kit is a razor or electric shaver. Being on holiday doesn't excuse poor grooming. And don't forget the shave cream. Many brands offer travel or trial size containers to help maximize space.

Skin Care

Vacations are no excuse for letting your skin go to pot. Pack a moisturizer with sunscreen and make it part of your daily morning routine. A face wash will also help keep your puss fresh and free from blemishes.

Hair Care

Sure, you can take your chances with the hotel brands – and depending on where you’re staying – you may luck out as many designer brands are now partnering with hotel chains to offer superior products. Either way, make sure you have shampoo and conditioner, especially to ward off the effects of chlorine and salt water on your follicles. Be sure to include a small metal or plastic comb to help style your hair after washing.

Common Scents

Being on holiday doesn’t mean you should smell like it, don’t forget your deodorant, bar of soap and a cologne for nights out. This is where department store and subscription box service samples come in handy. Vacation is a great time to experiment with different scents. Throw a few vials in and avoid the clunky bottle. And don’t forget your mouth – toothpaste, toothbrush and floss will help keep your breath fresh.

First Aid

Vacation is a time to let your hair down and overindulge. Remember to pack aspirin for those next-day hangovers and throw in some Benadryl for unexpected food reactions or bee stings. Bandages in various sizes may come in handy, especially if you’re showing off on the diving board or dance floor.

Bon voyage!
