It would be easy to blame the pandemic and the challenges of re-entering the workplace, but the proliferation of the fleece vest as the di rigeuer men’s office uniform predates Covid by several years.
If you work in any white-collar workplace, no doubt you’ve noticed most men donning button-down collared shirt and wool trousers topped off by a nondescript fleece vest – usually grey or black in color. It’s become the financial services mid-level executive’s version of Garanimals.

The look couldn’t be more vanilla or play it any safer. Men, especially those less plugged in to current fashion, embrace the carless efficiency of getting dressed each morning.
But one must ask, when did we surrender? When did putting a modicum of thought into an outfit or trying to make an impression, fall by the wayside? We’re better than this! Looking good isn’t that challenging if you only try. Thanks to hybrid work models, you only need muster enough effort two or three times a week.
Still not swayed? Maybe this will motivate you. Remote work has taken a bite out of standing out and making an impression. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) found that supervisors ‘sometimes forget’ about their remote workers. Nearly 70% replied that remote workers are “more easily replaceable than onsite workers.”
So, our advice? Go into the office, but don’t become a drone and get lost in the sea of grey fleece vests. Clothes can help make you stand out and perhaps even help move you up the ladder.
Here are three simple looks to elevate your office style and create an impression. Trust us, it won’t hurt a bit.
